🌟 GoldWave: All About Recording Settings, Get Perfectly Prepared!
Hello! This is ‘PHconlab’.
In our last session, we learned how to enhance editing efficiency using GoldWave’s Mix function and shortcut utilization.
Now, let’s dive into the first and most crucial step for high-quality audio content creation: how to prepare for recording in GoldWave.
For clear and clean recordings, precise settings and preparation before you start recording are essential.
Through this post, master GoldWave’s various recording methods and environment setup tips to further advance your audio production skills!
⏺️ Two Ways to Start Recording: GoldWave Recording for Every Situation!
In GoldWave, you can record in two ways: creating a new file and recording or re-recording over an existing file.
- ● Icon: Create a new file and start recording. It usually defaults to stereo (2 channels).
- {●} Icon: Overwrite existing audio in the selected area with new audio while recording. This feature can only be used when a selection area is set.
If you want to record in mono or 4 channels, you must click New to create a new file with the desired number of channels set in advance, and then start recording.

🔄 Re-recording Over Existing Audio: Perfectly Fixing Mistake Segments!
Sometimes, you might start recording by creating a new file, but then wish to re-record only a specific segment.
In such cases, GoldWave’s overwrite recording function is extremely useful.
- Select the Part to Modify: Precisely drag and select the segment of the existing audio that needs correction.
- Click Overwrite Icon: Click the ‘Circle on Square‘ icon on the selected segment; the existing audio in that segment will be deleted, and new recording will begin.
This function is very useful when you want to cleanly replace only a few mistake segments, saving audio editing time.
⚙️ Changing Recording Settings: Creating Your Custom Recording Environment!
GoldWave’s recording settings can be changed by clicking the ‘●■’ icon at the top, then navigating to the [Record] tab.
Here, you can finely adjust the length of your recording file and your recording mode to build an optimal recording environment.
- Use new file duration: Pre-set the length of the new file you will create. Using this option makes your work more convenient as you don’t have to specify the file length each time you record.
- Record mode: There are three recording modes available, which you can choose according to your needs.

Record Mode 1: Bounded to selection
In this mode, recording automatically stops at the end of the selected segment.
For example, if you select a 30-second segment, the recording will automatically end precisely at 30 seconds.
- Usage: Useful for recording short phrases or when repeating the same task.
Record Mode 2: Bounded and looped
This mode does not stop automatically at the end of the selected area; instead, it loops back to the starting point and continues recording.
When it returns to the starting point, it overwrites the previous audio file with the new one.
- Usage: It loops until you press the stop button, making it particularly good for practicing and recording the same phrase multiple times.
Record Mode 3: Unbounded
This mode continues recording indefinitely, regardless of any selected area or set time, until you press the stop button.
It is therefore ideal when you want to adjust the length in real-time and seamlessly continue your recording.
-
Usage Examples:
- To continue a recording that was previously interrupted: Position the selection area’s front bar at the point where you want to resume recording, then click the ‘Circle on Square’ icon. The previously recorded content will remain, and the recording will continue from that point.
- To insert new audio into a blank space within existing audio: Select the blank space, click the icon, and the new, longer audio will be inserted into the short blank space, with the file length automatically expanding.
- When you want to record freely and for a long duration without a set time limit: In this mode, even if you record longer than the selected area, the file will automatically extend, so there’s no need to manually reset the file length.
The Unbounded mode is particularly useful when recording long sentences spontaneously or when you want to speak and record naturally through an entire passage.
This is why many users choose Unbounded as their default recording mode in GoldWave.
