🚀 GoldWave: Unleash the Power of Post-Recording Editing to Elevate Your Sound Quality!

Hello! This is ‘PHconlab’.

In our last session, we explored how to set up a stable recording environment in GoldWave.

Now, let’s delve into the final and most crucial step for high-quality audio content creation: post-editing and sound quality correction methods.

By utilizing GoldWave’s diverse editing and sound quality correction features, you can transform your raw recorded audio into professional-grade results.

Through this post, master everything about post-recording editing with GoldWave to elevate your audio production skills to the next level!

🔍 Checking Cue Points and Starting Edits: The First Step to Efficient Post-Editing!

After completing your recording, the very first task is to review each of the Cue Points you marked during recording and proceed with the necessary editing tasks.

Cue Points are crucial tools that maximize post-editing efficiency.

  • Move to First Cue: Click the ‘Next{‘ icon at the top to move to the first Cue Point.
  • Edit Mistake Segments: If there’s a mistake or a section that needs correction, drag to select that segment and either delete it with ‘Delete‘ or mute it with ‘Mute‘.
  • Seamless Connection: If the remaining space after deletion feels unnatural, play back the surrounding sections to check the connection, and if necessary, copy a silent segment and paste it to fill the gap, ensuring smooth timing between sentences.

Repeat this process for every Cue Point, organizing the entire audio to be natural and seamless.

The red square box points to the “Next” icon at the top of the screen and the first cue point at the bottom of the screen.

🎛️ Using the Equalizer: Freely Adjusting Sound Tone!

The Equalizer is a powerful tool for adjusting the tone of your audio.

It allows you to control high, mid, and low frequencies individually, enabling subtle changes in the sound’s character.

The GoldWave Equalizer is most effective when applied immediately after recording.

  • Understanding the Function:

The Equalizer adjusts the frequency bands of sound.
The left bar controls low frequencies, the middle for mid frequencies, and the right for high frequencies.
Raising each bar amplifies it, while lowering it reduces it.

  • Utilizing Presets:

As it is a professional sound adjustment tool, it’s recommended for GoldWave beginners to use Presets (pre-configured settings) rather than adjusting manually.

    • Boost bass/mid/treble: Amplifies low/mid/high frequency ranges.
    • Reduce bass/mid/treble: Reduces low/mid/high frequency ranges.

  • Caution:

For recordings like audiobooks or narration where the raw voice is intended to be delivered, it’s not strictly necessary to use this function.
Excessive correction can make the sound quality unnatural, so it’s best to use it minimally and only when needed.

The red square box points to the “Equalizer” icon in the second row of icons at the top of the screen.

📈 Normalize: Optimizing Sound Volume: Ensuring Consistent Loudness!

If the volume of your recorded sound is inconsistent, you should use the Normalize effect to make the overall loudness uniform and consistent.

This significantly enhances the listening experience of your audio content.

  • Maximize Volume:

This function maximizes the overall volume of the sound while automatically reducing excessively loud parts to an appropriate level. It’s recommended to apply this function at least once at the final stage of editing.

The second row of icons at the top of the screen, the ‘Maximize Volume’ icon, is indicated by a red square box.

  • Compressor (Reduce Peaks):

Select ‘Reduce Peaks’ from the Presets to soften the highest peaks of the sound. This function reduces the dynamic range of the sound, balancing the overall volume.

The second row of icons at the top of the screen, the ‘Compressor/Expander’ icon, is clicked. The Presets item at the bottom of the window is indicated by the mouse cursor.

The GoldWave screen shows the audio waveform with the Compressor applied.

  • Application Order:

Generally, it’s recommended to apply Compressor ‘Reduce Peaks’ first, then reapply Maximize Volume to adjust the final loudness.

If the recording quality is clean, applying this process once is usually sufficient. If more precise adjustment is needed, you can modify the ‘Multiplier’ value in the Compressor’s ‘Reduce Peaks’ setting.

This is the Compressor/Expander settings screen. The Multiplier item is highlighted with a red rectangle.

🔉 Understanding the Compressor Function: Key to Dynamic Range Control!

The Compressor is a tool that reduces the dynamic range of sound.

Simply put, it reduces overly loud sounds and amplifies quieter ones to balance the overall audio.

  • Primary Use: It is particularly useful for instrument recordings or live performances where large variations in volume are present.
  • Tip for Beginners: For beginners or general voice recordings, using Presets like ‘Reduce Peaks’ is often sufficient to achieve good results, so deep diving into the Compressor may not be necessary.

Proper use of the Compressor can smooth out audio volume variations, providing a more comfortable listening experience for your audience.

This is the screen after clicking the ‘Compressor/Expander’ icon in the second row of icons at the top of the screen. The Presets item at the bottom of the window is highlighted with a red rectangle.
