🚀 GoldWave: Unifying Scattered Audio Files and Perfecting Sound Balance!

Hello! This is ‘PHconlab’.

In our last session, we explored GoldWave’s methods for organizing volume and saving files for upload.

Now, it’s time to delve into GoldWave’s advanced features that address the complex demands of high-quality audio content production.

These include the ‘File Merger’ function for combining multiple audio files and advanced usage of the ‘Compressor’ for delicately adjusting the dynamic range of sound.

Through this post, master expert-level know-how for efficiently managing audio files and optimizing sound quality with GoldWave to elevate your audio production skills to the next level!

🎶 File Merging: Combining Multiple Audios into One Content!

When you need to combine multiple voice files into one, simply copying and pasting can be cumbersome and time-consuming.

In such cases, GoldWave’s File Merger function allows you to easily connect several files to create a single audio content.

  • Step 1. Execute File Merger: Click ‘Tool‘ → ‘File Merger…‘ from the top menu.

Hover your mouse cursor over Tool - File Merger in the top menu.

  • Step 2. Add Files: Click the ‘Add Files…‘ button and select the audio files you want to merge, then add them to the list. Files currently open in GoldWave can be automatically added using the ‘Add Opened‘ button.
  • Step 3. Sort and Organize: Arrange the files in your desired order, or remove unnecessary files using ‘Remove‘ or ‘Clear‘.
  • Step 4. Set Sampling Rate: Set ‘Preferred sampling rate‘ to be the same as your existing files to prevent sound quality conflicts.
  • Step 5. Merge and Save: Click the ‘Merge…’ button to specify the name and format of the merged file, then save.

In the File Merger window, hover over the ‘Add Files’, ‘Remove’, ‘Clear’, and ‘Merge’ buttons with the red square boxes. The Preferred sampling rate value is set to 48000.

This process creates a new file where multiple files are combined into one.

At this point, Cue Points are automatically inserted at the connection points of each file, making it convenient to identify specific locations during audio editing.

The Cue Points at the bottom of the Goldwave are pointing to the red square boxes.

Explanation of Selection Options

  • Retain all cue points: Import all Cue Points from each file.
  • Export cue file: Save the generated Cue Points as a separate file.
  • Add Opened: Automatically add files currently open in GoldWave to the list.

In the File Merger window, hover over the ‘Add Opened’ button and the ‘Export cue file’ and ‘Retain all cue points’ options with the red square boxes.

🎛️ Compressor Advanced Usage: Perfectly Controlling Sound Dynamics!

The Compressor, which we briefly covered in a previous chapter, is a function that evens out the overall sound by compressing sounds that exceed a certain threshold.

By effectively utilizing this function in GoldWave, you can enhance the quality of your recorded audio and make it more pleasant to listen to.

  • Threshold: Sets the compression threshold. Only sounds louder than this threshold will be compressed.
  • Multiplier: Determines the percentage by which sounds exceeding the threshold will be reduced. For example, setting it to 50% compresses the volume by half.
  • Attack: Sets the time it takes for compression to begin when the sound increases. Set it shorter for abrupt sounds and longer for gradual sounds.
  • Release: Sets the time it takes for the sound to return to its original state after compression. Adjust this in conjunction with ‘Attack’ to create a natural effect.

Usage Tips:

  • Abrupt waveforms (e.g., claps, drums): Set ‘Attack/Release’ times short to react quickly.
  • Gradual waveforms (e.g., violin, singing): Set ‘Attack/Release’ times longer for smooth transitions.
  • Simple Application (Presets): If direct adjustment is challenging, simply selecting ‘Reduce Peaks’ from Presets can yield sufficiently good results.

In the Compressor/Expander window, point to the settings with the red square boxes.

When You Want to Apply Simply:

If adjusting the settings directly is difficult, simply selecting ‘Reduce Peaks‘ from Presets can yield sufficiently good results

Hover over ‘Reduce peaks’ in the bottom Presets options of the Compressor/Expander window.
