🌟 Audacity: Laying the Foundation for Efficient Audio Editing!

Hello! This is ‘PHconlab’.

For those interested in audio content creation and narration, in this post, we will delve into the core of basic audiobook editing using Audacity.

By perfectly mastering Audacity’s view adjustment functions, editing tools, and undo/redo capabilities, you can significantly boost your editing speed and achieve more precise audio edits.

Through this guide, master Audacity’s basic functions to elevate your audio production skills to the next level!

🖥️ View Adjustment (Zoom In/Out, Fit to Width)

Functions used to view audio waveforms in detail or overview, frequently utilized during editing.

  • Zoom In/Out:

Click the magnifying glass icons (+ magnifying glass, – magnifying glass) at the top of Audacity to zoom in or out of the waveform. The zoom reference point will be the playhead’s position or the selected area. As a keyboard shortcut, holding down the ‘Ctrl’ key and scrolling the mouse wheel up zooms in, and scrolling down zooms out. This shortcut is very convenient and highly recommended for active use.

  • Fit Selection to Width:

Click the magnifying glass icon next to the zoom out icon. This function automatically zooms in to display the currently selected audio area to fit the screen width. This is useful when zooming in quickly to specific sections that require detailed editing.

  • Fit Project to Width:

Click the magnifying glass icon next to the ‘Fit Selection to Width‘ icon. This function instantly zooms out to display all audio files in the current project on one screen. Convenient for quickly checking the length or structure of the entire audio file, or for reviewing the whole project after editing.

This image explains the “Zoom In/Out,” “Fit Selection to Width,” and “Fit Project to Width” functions, and lists the corresponding icons at the top center and their shortcut keys.

✂️ Editing Tools (Copy, Cut, Paste, Hide, Delete, Mute Selected Audio)

Basic editing functions for handling audio clips.

  • Copy (Ctrl + C), Cut (Ctrl + X), Paste (Ctrl + V):

Identical to functions commonly used in word processors or other programs. Drag and select the audio area you want to copy or cut, then use the right-click menu or shortcuts (Ctrl+C, Ctrl+X) to execute. Move the cursor to the desired paste location and use the right-click menu or shortcut (Ctrl+V).

    • Caution: When pasting a clip, ensure there is sufficient space at the end of the destination clip. If there isn’t enough space and it’s blocked by another clip, a message like ‘There is not enough room available to paste the selection’ may appear. In this case, you need to move the subsequent clip to create space before proceeding with pasting.

These two screen capture images show the process of “Copying,” “Cutting,” and “Pasting” audio clips in Audacity, with the right-click menu highlighted.

  • Hide (Clip Drag):

Move the mouse to the very end (right edge) of a clip and drag it to the left. The audio waveform for that part will disappear. This does not permanently delete the audio but temporarily hides it. To restore the sound, drag the mouse to the right from the end of the clip, and the hidden part will reappear. This is a useful function for recovering accidentally cut parts.

  • Delete (Backspace/Delete):

A function to permanently remove a specific part from an audio file. Drag and select the area you want to delete, then press the ‘Backspace‘ or ‘Delete‘ key on your keyboard to remove that part. Unlike ‘Hide’, deleted parts cannot be easily restored except by ‘Undo (Ctrl+Z)‘, so use with caution.

  • Mute Selected Audio:

This function completely removes the sound from a selected audio segment, making it silent. Unlike deleting or hiding, the segment itself remains, but the sound disappears. This function allows for easy and convenient insertion of silent segments. Click the ‘Mute‘ icon below the ‘Zoom Out’ icon at the top of Audacity, or use the shortcut ‘Ctrl + L‘.

    • For example, if you want to add a silent segment at the very beginning of a recorded file, you can conveniently insert a silent segment by copying an empty space with no sound, pasting it at the desired location, and then muting it.

Two audio waveform screens and a mute icon show the process of muting the selected area of the audio waveform in Audacity to eliminate sound. A tip is included recommending the method of inserting a silent section by copying and pasting, then muting.

↩️ Undo (Ctrl + Z) and Redo (Ctrl + Y)

Useful functions when you make a mistake during editing work.

  • Undo:

Cancels the most recently performed editing action and reverts to the previous state. The shortcut is ‘Ctrl + Z‘, and it can also be executed by clicking the left arrow icon at the top of Audacity.

  • Redo:

Reverts an undone action back to its original state. The shortcut is ‘Ctrl + Y‘, and it can also be executed by clicking the right arrow icon at the top of Audacity.

The text “Undo, Redo” is displayed on a white background, along with the undo and redo icons located at the top center of Audacity and an explanation of the shortcut keys “CTRL + Z” and “CTRL + Y.”
