Hello! This is ‘PHconlab’.

In our last session, we subtly adjusted audio tone with the EQ function.

Now, it’s time to set frequently used functions as shortcuts to significantly boost your editing speed and elevate your audio production skills.

Through this guide, master Audacity’s shortcut utilization know-how to optimize your audio editing workflow!

⌨️ Shortcut Settings: Significantly Boosting Your Audio Editing Speed!

Setting frequently used effects as shortcuts during audio editing can dramatically reduce editing time and greatly improve work efficiency.

How to Set Shortcuts

In the Audacity menu, go to ‘Edit’ > ‘Preferences’ > ‘Shortcuts’ window.

Use the search function in this window to find the effect you want to change or add a shortcut for.

  • Change/Add Shortcut: After searching for the desired effect, if there’s an existing shortcut, click the ‘Clear‘ button to delete it. Then, place the mouse cursor in the input field for the new shortcut, press the desired key (e.g., ‘M’), and click the ‘Set‘ button to apply the shortcut.

Recommended Shortcut Settings

You don’t need to set shortcuts for all effects, but it is highly recommended to set shortcuts for three effects that are particularly frequently used during audiobook editing.

  • Mute Audio: Used to eliminate unnecessary noise or the sound of specific sections. The default shortcut ‘Ctrl + L’ can be inconvenient to use, so it is recommended to change it to ‘M’ (for Mute).
  • Fade Out: Frequently used to make the sound at the end of audio or a cut section disappear naturally. It is recommended to set it to ‘F’ (for Fade).
  • Fade In: Used to make the sound at the beginning of audio or a cut section appear naturally. It is recommended to set it to ‘D’ (to the left of ‘F’ on the keyboard).

Setting these three shortcuts (M, F, D) will be very efficient for editing tasks that involve cleaning up unnecessary parts.

For example, after selecting a noisy section, just pressing ‘M’ will mute it immediately, and for choppy parts, pressing ‘F’ or ‘D’ can easily create a natural transition.

These shortcut settings significantly reduce editing time and also help reduce fatigue such as shoulder stiffness.

Of course, you can set them to any keys you find most comfortable, other than M/F/D.

This screen shows the process of setting shortcut keys for frequently used functions in Audacity. The procedure for assigning shortcut keys to desired effects via the “Edit → Presets → Shortcut Keys” menu is displayed.
