🌟 Audacity: Infusing New Character into Sound!

Hello! This is ‘PHconlab’.

For those interested in audio content creation and narration, in this post, we will delve into pitch and tempo adjustment, one of the core effects in audio editing using Audacity.

In our last session, we created natural audio transitions with fade in/out effects.

Now, it’s time to freely transform the speed and tone of audio to infuse unique character into your content.

Through this guide, master Audacity’s pitch and tempo adjustment know-how to elevate your audio production skills to the next level!

🎶 Pitch and Tempo Adjustment: Various Methods of Audio Transformation!

Audacity offers three effects that allow you to adjust the speed or pitch of recorded audio files in various ways.

  • Change Tempo:

Changes only the speed of the sound while maintaining the pitch.
Primarily used to correct recording state when the speed of the recorded audio does not match the overall flow of the content (e.g., when recorded too slowly/quickly).
However, slowing down the sound may result in sound quality degradation, so an appropriate value should be applied.
It can be compared to how crumpling paper is easy, but stretching it is difficult.

    • Path: ‘Effect’ > ‘Pitch and Tempo Change’ > ‘Change Tempo’
  • Change Speed and Pitch:

Changes both the speed and pitch of the sound simultaneously.
For example, speeding it up will make the voice thinner and higher pitched, while slowing it down will make the voice lower pitched.
This is similar to the sound produced when fast-forwarding or rewinding a tape.
Primarily used when you want to create special fast-forward/rewind effects.

    • Path: ‘Effect’ > ‘Pitch and Tempo’ > ‘Change Speed and Pitch’
  • Change Pitch:

Changes only the pitch of the sound while maintaining the speed.
This function is very useful for character acting in audiobooks.
For example, when one narrator needs to portray multiple characters, this effect can be used to adjust the voice higher for younger characters and lower for older characters, creating a distinct difference.
However, applying it too excessively can make it sound robotic, so subtle adjustments are important.

    • Path: ‘Effect’ > ‘Pitch and Tempo’ > ‘Change Pitch’

This screen shows the process of adjusting the pitch and tempo of audio using the “Effects → Pitch and Tempo” menu in Audacity. Options such as “Change: Tempo (Speed),” “Change Speed and Pitch,” and “Change Pitch” are highlighted.

Utilizing Preview Function

Before applying these pitch and tempo effects, you can use the ‘Preview‘ function to listen to the altered sound.

It is recommended to preview and adjust multiple times to find the appropriate values.
