Hello! This is ‘PHconlab’.

For those interested in audio content creation and narration, in this post, we will delve into Audacity installation and setup.

Audacity is a free program that offers professional audio editing features, making it highly recommended for beginners in audiobook and podcast production.

Through this guide, master Audacity’s basic recording procedures, efficient re-recording methods, and final file saving know-how to elevate your audio production skills to the next level!

💻 Introduction to Recording and Editing Software: Why Choose Audacity!

For free software for audiobook recording and editing, the two main options are GoldWave and Audacity.

In this course, we will proceed with recording and editing using Audacity.

Audacity has the advantage of being intuitive and easy to use even for first-time users, making it particularly suitable for audiobook production beginners.

How to Download and Install Audacity

The process of Audacity Installation is very simple.

  • Access Official Website: Open your internet browser and search for ‘Audacity‘ and access the official website.
  • Download Installation File: In the official download section, download and run the installer file appropriate for your operating system (Windows, macOS, etc.).

⏺️ Audacity Recording and Saving Methods: A Step-by-Step Guide for Clean Audio!

The procedure for recording and saving using Audacity follows these steps.

This sequence is a general recording guideline and can be flexibly changed according to individual recording equipment or environment.

  1. Properly connect the microphone or audio interface you will use to your PC.
  2. Launch the Audacity program, then accurately select the speaker (playback device) for listening to sound and the microphone (recording device) for recording, and set the recording channel (mono/stereo).
  3. Adjust the sample rate and gain to set the appropriate recording volume level.
  4. Click the record button in Audacity to start recording, and if a mistake occurs midway, utilize the effective re-recording methods presented below.

Microphone/Audio Interface Connection and Sound Control Panel Settings

The first step in audiobook recording is to properly connect the microphone or audio interface you will use to your computer.

Most modern operating systems automatically apply high-quality settings when equipment is connected.

However, if the recorded sound’s quality sounds strange, or is unclear like listening to a radio, you need to manually check and adjust the microphone volume and sound quality settings in Windows’ ‘Sound Control Panel‘.

  • Checking Path and Method:

In the Windows taskbar search box, type ‘Sound settings’ to navigate to the system’s ‘Sound settings‘ window. Alternatively, open the ‘Settings‘ app and select ‘Sound‘ from the ‘System’ menu. Find the ‘Input‘ section and click on the microphone you are currently using. On this screen, you can set the microphone’s ‘Format’ (sound quality) and ‘Input volume’.

  • Checking Sound Quality (Format):

It is important to check that the microphone’s ‘Format’ in the ‘Input settings’ section is set to the correct value (e.g., 44100Hz 16bit). If an incorrect format is selected, the sound quality during recording may degrade or the desired sound may not be properly recorded.

  • Adjusting Input Volume:

You can adjust the microphone’s sensitivity to pick up sound using the ‘Input volume‘ slider. If the recorded sound is too quiet no matter how loudly you speak, or conversely, too loud even when you speak softly, you need to adjust this slider directly to set an appropriate recording volume.

Three screens are listed in order: Windows “Sound Settings,” “Sound Control Panel,” and “Microphone Properties,” showing the path to the microphone volume and sound quality settings.

Speaker and Microphone Selection

After launching Audacity, accurately selecting the speaker (playback device) to listen to recorded sound and the microphone (recording device) to actually record sound is very important in the recording process.

  • Speaker Selection (Playback Device):

In the Audacity program’s top menu, click the ‘Audio Setup’ tab, then select ‘Playback Device’. Here, specify the speaker or headphones you want to listen to sound through. Many beginner users say they can’t hear sound after recording, and in most cases, this ‘Playback Device’ setting is incorrect. Correctly checking and changing this setting will solve 99% of sound playback issues.

  • Microphone Selection (Recording Device):

In the ‘Audio Setup’ menu, select ‘Recording Device’ to specify the microphone that will actually record sound. If multiple microphones are connected to your PC, such as a laptop’s built-in microphone, a webcam microphone, or an external USB microphone, you must accurately select which microphone Audacity should use to record sound.

  • Microphone Operation Check:

If you are unsure which microphone is correctly selected, you can check with a simple method. After pressing the record button in Audacity, gently scratch around the microphone you intend to use. If a recording waveform appears on the screen, it means that microphone is correctly selected and receiving sound input. If no waveform appears, you should select another microphone and try again.

Audacity’s user interface (UI) may change slightly with program updates. However, the name of the core tab, ‘Audio Setup’, rarely changes, so even if the version is different, you can easily change settings by finding and utilizing this tab.

Recording Channel and Sample Rate Selection

Recording channel and sample rate are important settings that determine the characteristics and quality of the audio file.

  • Recording Channel Selection:

The recording channel determines how many independent tracks the audio will be recorded on. Choose either mono or stereo, which we learned about in Chapter 3. Audiobooks often contain the voice of a single narrator, so if you are using only one microphone, it is common to select mono. If multiple microphones are connected to your PC or your smartphone has two built-in microphones, stereo recording is possible, but if you are recording alone, the left and right sounds being recorded separately can be inconvenient for editing later, unless there is a special purpose, it is recommended to choose mono.

  • Sample Rate Selection:

The sample rate is a crucial factor that determines the sound quality resolution of recorded audio. Audacity is by default set to 44100Hz. This value is equivalent to CD quality and is sufficient for capturing high-quality sound in audiobook production. Unless a particularly higher quality (e.g., 48000Hz) is required or recommended by a specific platform, it is recommended to leave the default settings and record. Higher sample rates also increase file size.
