For those interested in audio content creation and narration, in this post, we will delve into EQ (Equalizer) function, one of the core effects in audio editing using Audacity.
In our last session, we added spatiality to audio with Reverb and Echo effects.
Now, it’s time to master the Equalizer function that adjusts audio volume by frequency band, subtly changing the sound’s tone and timbre.

🎛️ EQ (Equalizer): The Magic of Adjusting Audio Tone Like a Pro!
EQ (Equalizer) is an effect that adjusts the volume by frequency band in audio.
Simply put, just as human voices have low, mid, and high frequencies, EQ allows you to arbitrarily adjust the tone or timbre of a voice by strengthening or weakening specific frequency ranges.
Lower Hz numbers refer to lower frequencies, and higher numbers refer to higher frequencies.
Examples of EQ Usage

Voice Tone Adjustment:
If your voice is thin and you want to give it a thicker feel, you can boost the low frequencies.
Conversely, if your voice is too thick and lacks clarity, you can boost the high frequencies to enhance clarity. -
Special Sound Effects:
When producing audiobooks, you can use EQ to create telephone sound effects or radio sound effects.
Since telephone and radio sounds are mostly heard with low and high frequencies removed, you can achieve these effects by adjusting the EQ to weaken those frequency ranges.
EQ Application Method: Filter Curve Equalizer
Drag to select the part you want to apply EQ to, then go to ‘Effect’ > ‘EQ and Filters’ menu.
Among the various EQ options, it is recommended to use the ‘Filter Curve Equalizer’.
You can create points on the equalizer graph by clicking with the mouse, and then drag these points to change the shape of the graph, thereby adjusting the volume of specific frequency bands.
To delete a point, click on it and drag it outside the graph.
Use the preview function to listen to the applied sound and adjust it to find the desired tone.
Understanding EQ to this extent is sufficient for effective use in audiobook production.
If you want more dynamic effects, it is recommended to experiment with different application values for various frequency ranges and listen frequently.
