🌟 Audacity: Adding Precision to Audio Editing!

Hello! This is ‘PHconlab’.

For those interested in audio content creation and narration, in this post,

we will delve into useful additional features that maximize the precision and efficiency of audio editing using Audacity, beyond its mixing functions.

From volume automation using the Envelope Tool to marking edit points with Labels, and utilizing external plugins,

through this guide, master Audacity’s hidden potential to elevate your audio production skills to the next level!

📈 Envelope Tool: The Magic of Automatically Adjusting Audio Volume!

The Envelope Tool is a useful function that allows you to easily adjust the volume of an audio track with the mouse.

It is used to create effects similar to those in radio broadcasts, where background music becomes quieter when the DJ speaks and then gets louder again after the DJ finishes speaking.

  • How to Use: Click the ‘Envelope Tool‘ icon in the Audacity toolbar at the top. Clicking on the track will create a white dot, and dragging these dots up and down with the mouse allows you to adjust the volume at that point. The volume is smoothly adjusted in the form of a line connecting the dots.
  • Add/Delete Points: To add a new point, click at the desired location. To delete a point, click and drag the point outside the track.
  • After Completing Work: After using the Envelope Tool, you must click the ‘Selection Tool’ icon (an icon shaped like the English letter ‘I’) to return to the original selection mode. Effectively utilizing this Envelope Tool can dynamically adjust the volume of music tracks, adding more fun to your audiobook.

This screen shows how to adjust the volume of an audio track using Audacity's “Envelope Tool.” It shows how to create volume changes by dragging the points generated on the waveform.

🏷️ Labels: Adding Smart Bookmarks to Your Audio Files!

Labels are a function that allows you to mark specific points in an audio file with text.

They are used like bookmarks to mark important sections.

  • Add Label at Selection: Drag to select the section you want to edit or where an episode transitions, then choose ‘Edit’ > ‘Labels’ > ‘Add Label at Selection’ or press the shortcut ‘Ctrl + B’. A label will be added to the selected area.
  • Add Label at Playback Position During Recording: Used when you want to mark a specific point in real-time during recording. For example, if a mistake occurs during recording, or if there’s a part you need to listen to again later. Press the shortcut ‘Ctrl + M’ during recording, and a label will be created immediately at the current playback position. Since it’s difficult to click the mouse during recording, memorizing this shortcut was very useful. You can use these labels to replace or supplement methods learned before, such as clapping, leaving long silent sections, or stopping and recording methods.
  • Label Notes: You can add notes to the added labels. However, notes are currently only available in English.

This screen shows two ways to add “labels” to specific points in an audio file in Audacity. It shows the process of adding labels to the selected area or adding labels in real time to the recording playback position.

🔌 External Plugins: Expanding Audacity’s Functionality!

Audacity provides a feature that allows you to import and use effects (plugins) created by other companies, in addition to its own effects.

These are called ‘external plugins’.

  • Real-time Effects: When using external plugins, click the ‘Effects‘ tab on the left side of the track, then add the desired effect via the ‘Real-time Effects‘ option. The biggest advantage of this function is that the effect can be applied in real-time before applying the value. Also, while typical Audacity effects change the waveform itself, real-time effects apply the effect only to the sound without changing the waveform. Therefore, applying and then canceling this effect is also simple.
  • Advantages of Use: This is a recently added feature as Audacity’s version has improved. It enhances editing flexibility by allowing you to maintain the original waveform for future modifications.

This screen shows the process of applying real-time effects using “internal and external plugins” in Audacity. The process of selecting the “Real-time Effects” option in the “Effects” tab of the track and adding plugins is shown.
